The "Responsible" AI market map - CB Insights Research

The Responsible AI market map...
from training data curation to model validation & monitoring, CB Insights breaks down the critical categories of vendors helping enterprises build and deploy AI in an ethical and legal manner

Generative AI's rapid ascent has added more fuel to the debate surrounding AI's biggest risks, including spreading misinformation, reinforcing biases, and misusing private or copyrighted materials.

As concern has mounted, Responsible AI has been thrown back into the spotlight.

Responsible AI is an umbrella term for various approaches and solutions that enable bias detection, fairness, explainability, and compliance throughout the AI development process.

CB Insights identified 73 startups developing Responsible AI tools across 9 different categories.

The companies are behind a paywall but there are conversations to have about the categories themselves:
  1. Training data curation
  2. Data anonymization & de- identification
  3. Synthetic training data generation... Tabular
  4. Version control & experiment tracking
  5. Federated learning platforms
  6. Media
  7. Al auditing & governance
  8. Foundation models
  9. Model validation & monitoring

Leading tech players — as well as a wave of non-profit research organizations — have also kickstarted their own initiatives, particularly as genAI momentum has accelerated.

For example, in July 2023, Microsoft, Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic announced the Frontier Model Forum. This organization will focus on advancing AI safety research, collaborating with policymakers, and identifying best practices for frontier models.

However, these companies aren't alone in their efforts — they are joined by a vast ecosystem of startups building solutions designed to support responsible AI principles and practices.
